St. Patrick – Did you know?
He was actually born in Scotland in 387 – his name at birth was believed to be Kilpatrick. At the age of 14 he was captured during a raid and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped at age 20. During his capture, he had turned to God in prayer and after his escape, he believed the people of Ireland were calling out to him for help. St. Patrick studied to be priest and after becoming a bishop, was sent to minister to Ireland in 433 where he lived and preached for the next 40 years. Why the shamrock? St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity and it has been associated with him and Ireland since that time.
