Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sandy Stanhouse I am married and have three beautiful girls. We reside in DuQuoin and attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
I started my career as a teacher assistant at Wheatley School in DuQuoin. I worked under the supervision of five wonderful experienced first grade teachers. I left Wheatley School in order to fulfill my requirements as a first grade student teacher at Carruthers School in Murphysboro. From there, I was hired at St. Bruno School as a first grade teacher. This is my 22nd year as a teacher at St. Bruno School. Eleven of those years were dedicated to first grade and now to kindergarten.
I attended Southern Illinois University and have a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with endorsements in Reading K-4, Reading Middle School, and Language Middle School. I have earned my basic, advanced and renewal Catechesis Certification. My achievements over the past years are a member of Who’s Who Among Teachers in 2004 and 2005 and being nominated for the Disney Hand Teacher Award in 2003 and 2004.
I am very passionate about teaching. Reading is a great love of mine. Comprehension, rote memorization, and higher order of thinking skills are important components in the reading process. In order for students to meet success, they must be exposed to learning experiences, which enables them to achieve a knowledge base. If the student’s background has limited his/her exposure to activities that stimulate learning, it is then my responsibility to provide the necessary instructional activities that will enable the students to become aware of their schema which will give the students the ability to construct meaning from printed text. I truly believe that teaching kindergarten is the best career in the world. These young individuals grow and develop right before my eyes and it is self-fulfilling knowing that I am important part of this development.
I enjoy watching my girls cheer, swim and grow. I love to vacation in Florida, sit by the ocean and enjoy the simple things in life.
